A memorial service for 34 U.S. veterans including nine of their spouses was held at the Fresh Pond Crematory in Middle Village where they were inurned and then transported to their final resting place at Long Island National Cemetary. Among them were two civil war veterans. The service was overseen by the Missing in America Project which has helped lay to rest over 1,400 veterans whose remains were left unclaimed.
